Thunderbird 26

The Thunderbird 26 sailboat was designed by Seattleite Ben Seaborne in 1958 as part of a competition by a Washington plywood company. The name “Thunderbird” honors it’s Pacific Northwest origin. It has become a very popular racing boat on the Salish Sea. Port Townsend hosts the largest collection of these vessels; there are more Thunderbirds in Port Townsend than any other kind of boat. Go out on a Wednesday or Friday evening and you’ll see many of these lovely boats racing in Port Townsend.

We at Sail Port Townsend are proud to offer two Thunderbird sailboats for captained sailing charters.

Amenities

The Thunderbird is a perfect day sailor for Port Townsend because they are light and fast. They can sail well in the smallest of breezes, but also handle the stronger turns of weather. They were technically built for this place.

“T-Birds” have a large and deep cockpit for a vessel of their size, and are roomy enough to comfortably seat six people.

All passengers are required to wear life jackets. We provide life jackets but you may bring your own if you prefer.

There is a safe and secure location for backpacks and shopping bags below deck.

We have a small marine camp toilet on board.

No former boating experience is necessary. Sit back and enjoy your sail. Participate and take a turn on the helm if you like!
